Headaches caused by displaced jaw joint

If the jaw joint becomes partially displaced, the muscles supporting the joint can spasm and this can cause headaches, migraines and even lead to tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

It is believed that a considerable number of headaches which are regular are caused by the imbalance of a set of five muscles on either side of the jaw.

This can be caused by a blow, but more commonly the spasm is caused by the jaws not fitting together is a stable central position. The muscles go into a spasm as a consequence and this leads to a number of problems including jaw stiffness, restricted opening, pain on opening the jaw and headaches.

Treatment can only be considered after a thorough examination and diagnosis. Treatment options include wearing splint, using a deprogrammer, braces or on severe cases adjustment of teeth (though this should never be the first course of treatment) and should only be undertaken by an experienced clinician as any mistakes are very difficult to rectify.
